The show followed the lives of the ‘exwives’ of some very well known stars of the Hollywood, sports and music worlds. The cast included:Nicole Murphy (Eddie Murphy): Sherie Fletcher (Will Smith); Andrea Kelly (R Kelly) and Jessica Conseco (Jose Conseco).
Mayte’s success is evidenced by a drive and work ethic that goes all the way back to her childhood. Born in Alabama to parents of Puerto Rican descent, Mayte grew up all over the United States and in Germany (due to her father’s career in the military), and spent her summers in Puerto Rico with her extended family. A dancer from when she was basically out of the womb, Mayte began classical ballet and belly dancing at the age of just three years old. Inspired by her mother who was a professional bellydancer, Mayte became the world’s youngest professional belly dancer at the tender age of 8. She was even featured on the popular show, “That’s Incredible.”
While still in Germany, Mayte went to a Prince concert with her family. At the concert, her mother and father noticed that his song “Thieves in the Temple” had a very Arabic vibe to it. Mayte’s mother told her to send Prince a tape of her belly dancing to his song to show him her talents. Although she laughed off her mother’s suggestion, she eventually obliged. At another Prince concert just a week later, Mayte’s mother convinced some members of the New Power Generation (NPG) to give the video to Prince. Ten minutes later, Mayte was asked backstage by Prince, and for two years, they kept in touch.
Finally, when Mayte turned 18, Prince asked her to be a part of the NPG. From 1992 to 1996, she was a featured dancer and background singer with Prince and the NPG. As such, she appeared in several music videos, as well as performing on tours, award shows, national and international television shows, and more. While still working with Prince, Mayte recorded and released her debut album “Child of the Sun,” with the first single “If I Love You 2Night.” Released in Europe, the album charted and the video was in rotation on MTV Europe as well as on VH1 in the States. She also contributed as a songwriter and singer to various Prince and NPG albums, and even began directing some of his tours and videos.
In 1997, Mayte directed the “Around the World in A Day” tour with the NPG dance company. Showcasing a broad range of dance forms and styles, the show received rave reviews, but was unfortunately cut short due to troubles in marketing and promotion. In 2001, Mayte also taught Britney Spears some belly dancing moves for her 2001 performance on the MTV Video Music Awards and for the hot and much talked about video for the song “I’m A Slave 4 U.”
In 2017 as the world was mourning the loss of Prince, Mayte released her memoirs of that time in her life- “The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince.” The heartfelt and touching autobiography soared to the top of several best seller lists and has been translated into several languages.
Soon after the book was released, Mayte – noticing that many in the musical community were still grieving, decided to go back to her belly dancing roots to help people move through their pain. She developed a belly dancing class – the “Shimmy, Sweat and Smile with Mayte” experience. The class has been a worldwide hit – and Mayte has done classes everywhere from Michigan to Seattle, Paris to Marrakech – the list continues to grow. In 2019, Mayte added a new, more in depth class to her lineup – “The Most Beautiful U Seminar”. Participants spend more in depth time with Mayte, learning about themselves and building upon their strengths and learning to utilize their own inner beauty to get through life’s difficult situations.
When not dancing, teaching, acting or writing – Mayte’s other passion is animal rescue. Her 501c3 non-profit “Mayte’s Rescue” has rescued hundreds of dogs from horrifying situations and conditions over the past 6 years – ensuring that they are placed in loving and happy homes. In 2019 – Mayte along with her business partner Veronica Vega-Stiles opened up a one stop shop for all things puppy related in LasVegas – “Boogie Time”. It has received several “two paws up” reviews from all the furry friends whohave visited so far!
2022 promises to be an exciting year for Mayte – with several new projects in the works and on the go. Stay tuned to see what this incredible force of nature has up her sleeve next.
